The Leopard Bush Fish, also known as the Leopard Ctenopoma or Ctenopoma acutirostre, is a species of freshwater fish that belongs to the family Anabantidae. It is native to the rivers and streams of West Africa, particularly in countries like Nigeria, Cameroon, and Gabon.

Here are some key features and characteristics of the Leopard Bush Fish:

  1. Appearance: The Leopard Ctenopoma has a distinctive and attractive appearance. It has a slender, elongated body with a rounded head and a large mouth. Its body is covered in intricate leopard-like spots, hence its name. The coloration of the spots can vary from brown to black, and they provide excellent camouflage in their natural habitat.

  2. Size: These fish can grow up to around 6-8 inches (15-20 cm) in length when fully grown, although some individuals may reach slightly larger sizes.

  3. Behavior: Leopard Bush Fish are generally peaceful and solitary by nature. They prefer to hide among aquatic vegetation or in crevices, waiting for prey to come close. They are also known for their ability to breathe atmospheric air, thanks to a specialized labyrinth organ, which allows them to survive in oxygen-poor environments or when the water quality deteriorates.

  4. Diet: In the wild, Leopard Ctenopomas are carnivorous and primarily feed on small invertebrates, such as insects, worms, and crustaceans. In an aquarium setting, they can be fed a variety of live or frozen foods, including bloodworms, brine shrimp, and small fish. It's important to provide them with a varied diet to ensure their nutritional needs are met.

  5. Aquarium requirements: When keeping Leopard Bush Fish in an aquarium, it's crucial to replicate their natural habitat as much as possible. Provide them with a well-filtered aquarium with plenty of hiding spots, such as rocks, caves, and dense vegetation. The water parameters should be kept within a temperature range of 75-82°F (24-28°C), with a slightly acidic to neutral pH of 6.0-7.5. They are tolerant of a wide range of water hardness.

  6. Compatibility: While Leopard Bush Fish are generally peaceful, they can be territorial and may display aggression towards conspecifics (members of the same species) or similar-looking fish. It's recommended to keep them in a species-only tank or with other peaceful, non-aggressive tank mates that are too large to be considered prey.
