Cross River Puffer Approx 6-8”
The Tetraodon pustulatus, commonly known as the Cross River Puffer or Red-line Puffer, is a sought-after freshwater species hailing from Africa. Its scarcity in the hobby market makes it highly coveted and often expensive.
Measuring around 40cm (15.75 inches) in standard length, the Pustulatus ranks as the third largest freshwater pufferfish, trailing behind the Tetraodon lineatus and Tetraodon mbu.
In aquarium care, these pufferfish thrive in spacious, well-established tanks with plenty of hiding spots, visual barriers, and soft, sandy substrates. They are notorious plant biters, favoring hardy species like Anubias, Java Fern, Bolbitis, and Amazon Sword. While they may nip at plants, fast-growing options like Limnophila sessiliflora can withstand their grazing.
A suitable aquarium setup includes ample hiding places along with open areas of substrate for wallowing. Moderate to strong water flow, achieved through canister filter spray bars, is preferred, ensuring adequate oxygenation and water agitation. Maintaining a slightly lowered water level allows for surface splashing, aiding in gas exchange.
